*Information correct as of June 2022
ATTENTION: From August 15th 2023, the Vietnam government will be bringing in their 90 day multiple entry evisa. This page will be updated with all the details after that date. So if you’re planning on a Southeast Asian backpacking adventure later in the year, you can factor this in and be able to enter and exit Vietnam multiple times with 1 evisa and not have to apply for different ones each time!

Vietnam is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s located in Southeast Asia, with a coastline along the South China Sea. The country is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Ha Long Bay, My Son Sanctuary, Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, and the Hoi An Ancient Town where there are endless cycling routes to experience.
The country’s history spans over 2,000 years, and it was once the site of an ancient civilization called Champa that reached its peak between the 1st and 6th centuries AD. Today, Vietnam has a diverse culture and is home to many people who speak different languages and eat unique foods.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting your E-visa for Vietnam in 2022.
Step 1: Check if you NEED an E-visa
Some foreign citizens are eligible to enter Vietnam visa free. Meaning they don’t need to apply for a Visa if they are staying under a certain number of days because the Vietnam government has signed a bilateral/unilateral visa exemption agreement for their country.
Visa Exempt countries
14 Days Visa Free |
---|
Brunei Myanmar |
15 Days Visa Free |
---|
Belarus Denmark Finland France Germany Italy Japan Norway Russia South Korea Spain Sweden United Kingdom |
21 Days Visa Free |
---|
The Phillipines |
30 Days Visa Free |

Step 2: Check if you’re ELIGIBLE for an E-visa
You must hold a passport for one of these 80 countries to be eligible to apply for a 30 day, single entry E-visa.
(For example: UK passport holders can enter Vietnam visa free if they are visiting for under 15 days, but if they want to stay for 4 weeks, they should apply for an E-visa as that allows them to stay for a longer duration)
Eligible E-visa countries
Andorra Argentina Armenia Australia Austria Azerbaijan Belarus Belgium Bosnia and Herzegovina Brazil Brunei Darussalam Bulgaria Canada Chile China (including Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR passport holders, not applicable to Chinese e-passport holders) Colombia Croatia Cuba Cyprus Czech Republic Denmark Estonia Fiji Finland France Georgia Germany Greece Hungary Iceland India Ireland Italy Japan Kazakhstan Latvia Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg Macedonia Malta Marshall Islands Mexico Micronesia Moldova Monaco Mongolia Montenegro Myanmar Nauru Netherlands New Zealand Norway Palau Panama Philippines Poland Portugal Qatar Republic of Korea Romania Russia Salomons Islands San Marino Serbia Slovakia Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland Timor Leste United Arab Emirates United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland United States of America Uruguay Vanuatu Venezuela Western Samoa |
Step 3: Get your passport
You’ll need a valid passport, with at least 6 months left before it expires, to apply for a Vietnamese E-visa. If you don’t have one already, you can get one at the nearest embassy or consulate. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your arrival in Vietnam and must contain at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps.
Step 4: Take a passport photo
You’ll need to upload a passport photo (.jpg) to the E-visa website. It must be 4cm x 6cm, on a plain white background, staring at the camera with no glasses on.
Step 5: Have your information ready
The E-visa page asks for some of the following information so have this ready before you begin: the port you will be entering and exiting Vietnam, an address of where you will be staying while in Vietnam (this can be your hotel on your first night so pre-book that before you arrive), your religion (yeah, I know, that’s a little unusual), passport details (and passport photo page that must be uploaded in .jpg) and your intended length of stay.
Step 6: Apply for your E-visa online
The best way to apply for a Vietnamese visa is through the official government website https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/
UPDATE: I applied for my E-Visa in July 2022 and it took 4 full business day for me to receive it. I received an email when it was ready and then i logged on and downloaded the PDF with my e-visa on it. I also had to pay through Payoo using my credit card. It was a very easy process.
